Organisation and human resources

The EDPS was established in 2004 and currently employs around 60 staff members, divided into six units and sectors:

  • Supervision and Enforcement promotes a data protection culture within the EU institutions and bodies so that they are aware of their obligations and accountable for compliance with data protection requirements.
  • Policy and Consultation ensures that the EU legislator (Commission, Parliament and Council) is aware of data protection requirements and integrates data protection in new legislation.
  • Information and Communication develops a creative and effective communication strategy.
  • IT Policy assesses the privacy risks of new technologies by collecting and analysing information as appropriate.
  • Human resources, budget and administration improves the use of EDPS human, financial, technical and organisational resources.
  • Records Management Sector provides internal operational support and coordinates records management activities.

The provisions concerning the EU civil service are set out in the European Communities’ Staff Regulations . Article 1 stipulates that, for this purpose, the EDPS is treated as an institution of the Communities. In practice, that means that EDPS staff are subject to the rights and obligations of the Staff Regulations, and that recruitment to the EDPS follows the procedures laid down in them.

In addition to statutory staff, programs for national experts and trainees provide much valued assistance on a temporary basis.
